What do you work for? Does your work define you? If not, what defines you? Colossians reminds us that work is our duty to the Lord, and to no one else.

Does Work Define You?

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23–24 ESV

Work can be tricky. Often times in a social setting the first thing that is asked of a person is what they do for a living. Work, many times, can define who we are, and we spend most of our day working, but to what end?

Our identity can quickly get tangled up in what we do for a living. “Oh I’m an accountant, or I’m a minister, or a teacher.” Do we work to earn money, pay bills, receive recognition, or to gain fame?

Our Duty to the Lord

Colossians reminds us that work is our duty to the Lord, and to no one else. It is not to please others, to gain recognition, or to gather followers. Work is our out-pouring of what the Lord has done for us. Work is the overflow of who God created us to be. It is recognizing our gifts, and using them for the glory of the Lord.

Work for the Lord

When we work for man (woman) nothing is enough. We receive our reward from the Lord, not from the world. There will never be enough recognition for the world that will measure up to the reward that awaits those who are wholeheartedly working for the Lord. It is for him and him alone that we work, toil, and press on each and every day. We are serving the Lord. That is what we do for a living. All other tasks are to point back to that very fact. Our identity is not in our work, but in the One who created us to do our work.
