Do you understand how powerful and precious the Gospel message is? Peter teaches us about the power of the Gospel and the word of God in 1 Peter. It is important for us as believers to understand just how powerful the gift of the Gospel is and use it every day in our lives.
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 1 Peter 1:10–12
The great Charles Haddon Spurgeon once said,
“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”
The Word of God
The Word of God is one of the greatest gifts to humanity that God has ever given us. In 1 Peter 1:10, the prophets of old studied, investigated, anticipated, and inquired of the Word of God. They recognized its inspiration from God, it’s preservation from God, and its revelation of God, and in our investigation of the Word of God, we find the very same outcome. When we investigate, we discover the accuracy, the reliability, and the authority of the Word of God in our lives and for all humanity.
In v. 11 it reminds us that the Old Testament prophets, by the power of the Holy Spirit, wrote about the things that they never fully understood. Could you imagine?! Though they had these wonderful prophecies, these incredible revelations from God, about the coming Savior to the world, they longed to know their full meaning! They knew they were writing for the generations to come. They didn’t get to sit under the earthly teaching ministry of Jesus. They didn’t get to see Jesus born of a virgin, die on a cross, resurrected three days later, and sitting at the right hand of God. Even Jesus told us this is true. In Matthew 13:16–17, He told His disciples,
But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
The Message of Salvation
Precious Church, we have seen Him, we have heard Him, we know Him, we have Him, and we anticipate His future glory, His return for His Church. We have His complete Word, the Old and New Testament. What most of humanity anticipated over thousands of years, has been revealed to us. Peter says in v. 10, that they “…prophesied about the grace that was to be yours…” God’s revelation, the Word of God, is His gift to us, and better yet, Peter says, it is His GRACE to us. This heavenly message of salvation is freely and gracefully given.

Do you understand what Peter is doing here? He is working to elevate your realization of the profound awesomeness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as Peter calls it here, the “good news” that was preached to us!
Some of you act like the Gospel is secondary to our efforts as Christians, and the reality is, you’re behaving like no Christian at all if the Gospel of Jesus Christ isn’t central to all that you are and all that you do. The Holy Spirit of God Himself is the author of this proclaimed message and saving of souls is at the forefront of the mission of God. It is only done so through the preaching and proclaiming of the Gospel. It was the good news back then, it is the good news now, and for all of eternity, we will celebrate the greatest news that man has ever received, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Power of the Gospel
The power and happenings of the Gospel is so wonderful, Peter tells us, that even the angels look with great anticipation and curiosity. Think about that, these beings rest in the presence, and power, and majesty of God eternally, and here they find themselves longing to look into this message of salvation…declared by the prophets, revealed by the Holy Spirit, and listen, it is available for all who will receive it by faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and their Lord!
The writer of Hebrews writes in Hebrews 2:3,
“…how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?
Don’t neglect His wonderful forgiveness and salvation. Maybe this message is for you. Trust Christ, seek forgiveness, and be saved right now. Who can escape God? Is He calling you to be saved?
And, for the Church, cherish the Word of God, rejoice in the awesomeness of God, and the joy of your salvation. This is our access to joy unspeakable!
