Confidence in Evangelism

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, ESV)

Have you ever been in a situation when God has blessed you with the privilege to tell others about Him? As Christians we have been commanded to tell people about Jesus Christ and the message that we are telling is called the Gospel (literally “good news”). Quite literally, we were told to go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). Does the thought of sharing this good news with strangers make you nervous? Do you get nervous to share about the faith that God has gifted to you? We know that the Apostle Paul was not ashamed of the Gospel, and we shouldn’t be either. When we evangelize, we should pray that God would give us the boldness and confidence we need to share the Gospel. Although every situation is different, Christians ought to have confidence in evangelism.

The Gospel Must Transform You Before You Have the Confidence to Share It

Before the Gospel message can be shared without nervousness, anxiety, or shame, one must first be transformed by the Gospel. The Gospel is the power of God to everyone who believes. It may be difficult for you to share the message of the gospel if you have yet to believe the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. In order to have confidence in evangelism, you must be born again. If you are going to attempt to teach others about the necessity of repentance, it would make sense that you would also be someone who has repented. Maybe it is difficult for you to share the Gospel message because you have yet to believe in the Gospel.

The Sufficiency of the Gospel is Where We Find Our Confidence

The God of the Bible is sovereign. He knows all things and has given us the gospel to share to others. Christians can have confidence in their evangelism by believing in the sufficiency of the Gospel message. Paul was unashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God for salvation. Our confidence is not based upon how great of a public speaker we are. Our confidence is not based upon how intelligent we are. Our confidence is not based upon our personal testimony. Our confidence in evangelism is found only in the message that we are sinners, Jesus Christ died on behalf of sinners, and by repenting and believing in his accomplished work, his righteousness is imputed to me. If our confidence is based upon anything else, we have much to be ashamed of, but if our confidence is found in the gospel message, we can be like Paul and be unashamed of the Gospel.

The Gospel Message Possesses Salvation Power for Those Who Believe

We can have confidence in Evangelism because the Gospel message has power. The Gospel is power for all those who believe. Our calling is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not save people. God does the saving and He is perfect at what He does. Let your confidence be found in the sovereignty of God over salvation. Let your evangelistic ministry rest in the promise that the Gospel message is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes. We can have confidence in our evangelism because the people we share the gospel with could potentially come to saving faith in Jesus Christ. We can have confidence in our evangelism because God is sovereign. We can have confidence in our evangelism because the gospel message is powerful. We can have confidence in our evangelism because the gospel is the message that Christ has commissioned the church to share. May we make much of Jesus as he empowers us to share about him.
