Trapped Like a Bird

When I walked into my living one morning last summer, I noticed my two cats behaving unusually. Standing on their hind legs, they had their front paws propped up on the cold metal rim of the wood stove door and were staring intently through the glass-plated door into the dim interior. Wondering what could possibly have them so enthralled, I joined them in peering into the stove. There, I saw a small bird fluttering in the ashes. Somehow the bird had fallen down the stove pipe and, because the chimney is so narrow, it was unable to fly back out. Despite its efforts to escape, it was hopelessly trapped. Moved with compassion for its plight, I set out on a mission to liberate it. After locking my cats in a separate room, I opened all the doors and windows in my living room to give the bird plenty of exit points. Then, I carefully unsealed the wood stove door. Hungry for fresh air and open skies, the little bird rocketed out of the stove and straight out the back door, a little dusty but otherwise unharmed.
