The movie The Notebook features a beautiful contemporary love story between a man and a woman who fall so deeply for each other that they can’t live without one another and grow old together. As romantic and moving as this film may be, it is yet another example of how our culture is seeking something much deeper than it can understand. They’re seeking the need to feel complete.

Indeed, the love we are seeking cannot be found in another human being, as thrilling and enriching as love between two people can be. For those disillusioned by romantic relationships, it also is not in a career, in riches, fame or accomplishments. Even self-sacrifices won’t do.

In the third chapter of his letter to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul reveals to them (and to us) God’s plan for us. Our Creator designed this plan and it will not change no matter how we feel about it. Going against it only hurts us. God’s will is that “you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is.” It is only then that “you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

How powerful is that!? Nothing in this world can satisfy us and make us feel complete like the love of God, and abiding in the depths of it. We were created for a deep and intimate relationship with our heavenly Father.

What does it look like?

It all begins with Jesus. Whether you have been a follower of Christ for decades, or are simply curious about the Christian faith, it is a truth that sets all the rest in motion for you and me. Can you imagine for a minute what hanging on the cross must have been like? Picture the torture, the nails, the humiliation, the crown of thorns, the rejection, the deep pain inside and out…

THAT is love.

Why? Because Jesus chose to give His life in the most excruciating way to pay for the price of our wrong doing and be a bridge between God and us through faith in Him. He did not have to. God could have wiped humanity off the surface of the earth and be done with us. Rather, He did what we could not do for ourselves so that we may have access to God and eternal forgiveness.

This love is alive and overwhelming; and it alone can make us feel complete.

In the words of Blaise Pascal, a French physicist and philosopher, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, and it can never be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God, made known through Jesus Christ.”

May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Ephesians 3:19 NLT

Prayer

God, thank You for choosing us, and for the sacrifice of Christ. Forgive us our wrong doing. Your Word says that all God’s people should understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is. Reveal it to us, daily. Let us live in it and be complete in it. Help us share Your love with the world.
