Treasures of This World
Traveling across the United States with my husband has granted us the opportunity to see many local historical sites in the states we’ve visited. For example, in Arizona, there are many old mining towns that are worth the visit and they all tend to talk about gold. When traveling over the old Route 66, one comes to the unincorporated town of Oatman. You hear the local history about how the original gold mine brought many people and how some mines around the little town are still active. Among the many gold mines in Arizona, perhaps the most famous is the Lost Dutchman mine. The story is told of a German immigrant who discovered the famed mine, only to disappear into the Superstition Mountains, with the path to the mine also lost. Subsequently, numerous others were led by the legend into the Arizona desert by the fabled gold mine, only to be lost as well.
The Treasure of the Bible
Many over the years have been struck with the gold fever and it was the gold and silver boom that caused people to travel West in the 1800s, settling many of our western states. However, there is another, more valuable treasure in which people can seek; the path to these riches is as simple as opening a book. What’s that book? The Bible! The Bible is described in 2 Timothy 3:16–17 as “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” Hebrews 4:12 also states: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing was far as the. division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (NASB).
The Word of God is living and active; a treasure trove and rich with history, inspired by God. The study of Scripture can lead you from one rich vein of the mine of truth to yet another richer, fuller vein of understanding, if you are willing to search and delve into it.
However, unlike fabled lost mines of the Southwest, the Bible — God’s Word, is NOT lost. The Bible is the best selling book of all time, speaking truth to those who seek it and leading others to salvation. Rich in history, wisdom, and knowledge for those willing to take the the time to mine for these treasures. And what’s the result? Love, joy, peace, salvation, and instructions for right living.
The Holy Scriptures are treasures no one can take from you. Unlike a 401K retirement plan or money invested in the stock market, they will not be swept away with an economic downturn. The Word of God, hidden in your heart, can sustain you in the darkest of times, and it can be shared with hungry souls to satisfy their spiritual needs. It is a treasure to be shared, not hoarded — for when it is shared, it brings life, hope, love and salvation.
Do You Treasure the Bible
How about you, my friend? Are you ready to mine the depths of the riches of God’s Word? To take the treasures within and hold them close to your heart so in turn, you can share them with those starving for that which you possess.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, may we hunger and thirst after Your Word, the Truth — Jesus Christ, getting to know Him better by the study of Your Word. May the words in Your Holy Bible inspire us to live as You intend and to share these truths we mine for. Thank You, In Jesus’ Name — Amen.
